![]() ![]() With a cheap Chinese mic, you don't know exactly what you're getting off the assembly line. If I ever buy another one, I can expect it will sound almost exactly the same. I have a Royer R-121 I bought several years ago. It comes down to mainly two things (and I know you know this, but just for the record):ฤก) Build quality is higher with more expensive mics, but the main thing you're paying for is quality control that insures consistent, repeatable results. I just wanted to chime in on the reason why some of us might go the extra distance for something like a Royer or AEA ribbon mic. Since the OP isn't "very serious about recording, so not interested in uber expensive mics," a Chinese ribbon mic is a great way to experiment with that particular sound. well, those are both superior in several ways, but whether they are as much as 30 or 40X superior is something only a user can decide. If you are asking how they compare to a Royer 121 or Beyer M160. You can make good recordings with them (as you can with most of the low cost Chinese ribbons). They'll give you a different sound palate than you'll get from a condenser or moving coil dynamic. They do cost more than the mic, unfortunately, but really make all the difference in the world to how useable these mics are and even at the combined cost, it's still good value in my view. I recommend use of a pre-pre amp such as the Triton Fethead or Cloud Lifter with these mics (unless you have a very high-end preamp available already). Some of the complaints you hear are down to people not realising this. This is the key - you do need around 70dB (at least) of very quiet gain to get the best out of them. With a good, quiet, high gain preamp it was perfectly usable. I have not had an R40 in my hands, but I have tested the R144. The R40 is an OEM (MF) version of the R144. ![]()
